Watch Edward Snowden’s LIVE at SXSW here

Edward Snowden will give his South by South West (SXSW) seminar at 4pm GMT today. You can watch this live via the stream below.

This will be a rare opportunity to hear thoughts directly from Snowden, who has been living in Russia since shortly after leaking the trove of secret government documents. These exposed the broad surveillance programs to the press which has led to debate, reform and outrage across the globe. Surveillance is the hot topic at SXSW this year and Snowden's speech is arguably the most anticipated happening at SXSW since the festival began

Fax Your GP ‘brings back the Fax’ to help YOU opt-out of the NHS’s medical record sharing scheme

If you live in the UK and would like your medical records to remain private you will need to opt-out of the government's 'Care.data' policy. If you do not opt-out your medical records will be added to a giant database and shared with both the public and private sector by the National Health Service (NHS).

The NHS are not allowing UK citizens to opt-out via email but they are accepting Fax messages. This is where 'Fax your GP' enters the equation!

Fax Your GP

Fax your GP is a great, volunteer run initiative. The service provides UK citizens with an online templated letter. Once completed this is automatically faxed to each person's local GP. The fax requests that they would like their medical records to remain private and that they are opting out of the scheme.

You can create a letter online & have it faxed to your local GP via: https://www.faxyourgp.com

The infographic below has been released by Twitter UK. More than 80% of UK Twitter users say they are planning to watch at least some of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Will this be the 'most tweeted Olympic Games to date'?

‘Post-Death control of Digital Assets’. Seminar at the University of Bath

University of Bath

On the 21 February I will be running a seminar exploring the increasing value asserted to digital assets in today's digital world. This will delve into how our digital footprint becomes our legacy when we die and the value assigned to our digital assets both in life and death

Event Overview

We all know that we'll eventually die but very few people make plans for the entirety of their assets, especially digital ones. This CDAS seminar on the post-death afterlife of digital assets will examine how individual's can manage the full spectrum of 21st century property and the challenges posed by the digital world. The speakers will address everything from management of estates to controlling a person's post-mortem identity. Whether it's passwords, social networking accounts, or online property, the certainty of death opens up an entirely new world for living next of kin to negotiate after a person dies.

Speakers: James Norris, CEO of DeadSocial, Dr. Wendy Moncur, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, Andrea Pierce, Head of Legal Services at Kings Court Trust Ltd For further information as it becomes available and to book, visit the events page

The Growth of Social Media 2008-2013

The is no denying that social media has changed the way in which we communicate with one another forever. The infographic below shows the extent of this growth and is a great indicator to highlight just how rapid it's influence has become over the last 5 years.

Social Media Week Review / Social Media Strategist speaking at Social Media Week 2013

Social Media Week   Healthbox Bloomberg

Between 23-27th September 2013 the annual (occasionally bi-annual) Social Media Week took place. Over the course of the week leading thinkers and businesses in the sector hosted and spoke about the sector and often within their vertical of expertise.

Nokia was once again Social Media Weeks headline sponsor with Chinwag (in the UK) managing and facilitating the official programming, marketing, PR and logistics. This year 8 cities took part and more than 25,000 attendees participated in and attended events.  Speakers ranged from Richard Branson to Larry King.

James Norris (of Social Media Strategist) spoke at three events in London over the week. The first was hosted and ran by Social Media Strategist’s software ‘DeadSocial’. This event ‘Death, Digital Demise & Our Digital Legacy’ welcomed a range of differing speakers looking at end of life within today’s connected world. Here is a video from the event:

The next day James spoke at Bloomberg’s London stage for Healthbox’s Panel Discussion ‘ Healthcare Marketing, Pulse Found’. This addressed a range of subject matters and challenges that marketing within the healthcare sector can raise.

DeadSocial then supported Lawrence Darani’s existentialist workshop ‘what is it about death that scares us?’. This was a fascinating look into how we can live on through an existentialist perspective. This was heavily influenced by Irvin D. Yalom's works.

As always the events and workshops during Social Media Week were top notch. It was great to see some old faces and meet some new people breaking into the social and digital sector. I would like to congratulate Sam Michal and the rest of the Chinwag team for providing an amazing program and successful series of events.
